The Chancellor is a nine-residence Beaux-Arts building completed in 1914 on one of the quietest blocks in Kalorama, two doors from Embassy Row. This is a principal-floor apartment of four bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths, with 2,890 square feet of floor plan and north-facing light in the principal rooms for the better part of the afternoon.
The original plasterwork survives throughout. The principal salon retains its egg-and-dart cornice and its coffered ceiling; the millwork in the library is original to the building, with a later-added walnut bookshelf installed by a previous resident and retained by the office with the owner’s consent. The kitchen was reconfigured in 2019 by Keener’s in-house preservation team — the original butler’s pantry was restored and the appliances were recessed behind a paneled cabinet run of unlacquered brass and quarter-sawn oak.
A private elevator runs from street to parlor, recently serviced. The building has a resident concierge on weekdays, nine to six, and a garaged parking space conveys with the apartment.
