Embassies, Beaux-Arts chanceries, and the capital's quietest hilltop.
Kalorama sits on a hilltop above Dupont Circle, its streets lined with Beaux-Arts chanceries and federal townhouses that have, for more than a century, housed the residences of ambassadors, cabinet secretaries, and a small number of private families determined enough to secure one.
The neighborhood’s residential fabric is unusually intact. Zoning restrictions, embassy easements, and the sheer patience of its owners have preserved the limestone-and-brick character that defined the district at its turn-of-the-century peak. The blocks east of Connecticut Avenue read almost as they did in 1914: sycamores overhead, iron railings below, and the occasional glimpse of a principal salon through a tall sash window.
We have managed buildings in Kalorama since the firm’s first year. The Chancellor, at 2039 Wyoming Avenue, has been in our care since 1989.
