Ledger of arrivals, 1982.

The first nine residences, in the first year — a leaf from the firm's earliest register.

Ledger of arrivals, 1982.

The firm’s original leather-bound ledger, still kept in the office safe, lists nine residences taken under management in the twelve months beginning October 1982. Eight of them were on blocks we still manage today. The ninth was a single-family townhouse on P Street that the family sold in 1986; we have no record of its condition since.

The rent on the highest-priced of the nine — a four-bedroom flat in Kalorama — was $1,450 a month. The rent on the lowest was $425. Margaret Keener’s handwriting fills the left column of every page; the corresponding entries on the right, recording the residents who took occupancy, are in five different hands.

We print the first page of the ledger, in facsimile, with a residents’ letter from 1983 that accompanied it into the archive.
